How Heat by Design™ works behind the ‘scenes’. |

The Heat by Design picture heater warms the ambient environment in two ways: natural convection and direct infrared radiation.
Natural convection is the circulation of matter (in this case air) caused by density changes due to heating. Warm air flows upward from the panel’s surface and is replaced with denser, cooler air. Natural convection is the fundamental principal that causes our planet’s weather - or the atmosphere’s high and low pressures. All common household radiators work due to convection.
Infrared radiation (heat) is an energy exchange that is found in nature as well. The earth is constantly radiated (heated) by the sun, which warms the surface of the earth with infrared energy. With infrared radiation, there is no movement of material, only the electromagnetic waves emitted from the surface of higher temperature objects (the sun) that transfer energy to an object of a lower temperature (the earth).
The infrared rays are invisible to the naked eye, but are present in all around us. For example, an incandescent lamp converts 90 – 95% of the energy consumed to infrared radiation (heat), while only 5 – 10% is converted to visible light.
