Frequently asked questions about Heat by Design

Question:
What size rooms will the picture heat?

Answer:
The actual temperature increase is dependent upon multiple factors, including room insulation, number of windows, air circulation and picture placement.  The picture heater can warm a 10’ x10’ interior insulated room with 8 foot ceilings, approximately 3° –7° F.

Question:
Where should I hang my picture heater?

Answer:

The picture heater is designed to radiate a constant and consistent source of heat.   This feature is appealing because it doesn’t allow your body to get cold and the heat isn’t blown at you your skin to dry out.  It works best when hung within the proximity of intended use.

The picture heater can be hung in a room near an electrical outlet in any interior room that is not a wet location or exposed to excessive moisture.   Many users mount their picture heaters in places such as over a couch, next to a favorite easy chair or in the basement rec room.  It functions best with 8 foot ceilings or lower.

NOTE: The rear of the picture heater is insulated, but still generates a minimal amount of heat.  This may have long term affect on wall paper adhesive.  Mounting the picture heater on a wall papered surface is generally not recommended.

Question:
How hot will the picture heater get?

Answer:

The front surface of the Heat by Design picture heater is designed to operate at approximately 200° F and is hot to the touch.  The picture is off-set from the wall by approximately 1 inch, so the heat will not be directly on the surface of the wall.

Question:
How much will it cost to use the picture heater?

Answer:

In the United States, electricity prices are regulated locally, so check your electric utility bill for your current rates.   To calculate your electricity costs, find a copy of your electric bill.  To calculate your delivered kWh cost, divide the total charges ($) by the kilowatt hours (kWh) on your bill.  This is you delivered kWh cost.  In Chicago, the cost per kWh is $0.117.

The picture heater operates with an energy efficient GentleHeat™ Thermal cycle mode.  The heater conserves energy by only drawing power about 50% of the time.  Warm air is naturally circulated without the need for fan power (see How It Works).  This results in a space heater that is typically 15% more efficient than other flat panel heaters.

The large picture heater draws 680 watts per hour (or .680 kWh).  Assuming you live in Chicago, the cost per hour to use the picture heater would be $0.117 x 0.680 kWh x 50% duty cycle= $0.036 per hour.

The small picture heater draws 375 watts per hour (or .375 kWh).  Assuming you live in Chicago, the cost per hour to use the picture heater would be $0.117 x 0.375 kWh  x 50% duty cycle = $0.02 per hour

Question:
Is the Heat by Design picture listed by Underwriter’s Laboratories?

Answer:
Yes.  UL File # E311619

Question:
Can I crop my custom photograph or logo after I upload it to www.heat-by-design.com?

Answer:

No. Heat by Design picture heaters use aspect ratios of 3:4 (portrait) or 4:3 (landscape). Before finalizing your order, you will have an opportunity to view a thumbnail of your image that will be printed. If you upload an image that is not a 4:3 aspect ratio, the website will crop and size the image to properly fit a horizontal or vertical orientation at a 4:3 ratio. Be sure to examine the cropping of the photograph before you place your order. You will be asked to confirm if the image is acceptable.

Question:
How will my custom photograph or logo look once it is printed on the picture heater?

Answer:

Viewing the image on a computer screen or any display monitor WILL NOT accurately represent the final image.  Printing your photo image on typical photo paper through any photo processing retailer will be the most accurate representation of your enlarged image.

For the Heat By Design Picture Heater, your enlarged image will be printed on a special metallic heat plate in the highest possible resolution.  This image will appear to be slightly lower in resolution and colors may slightly vary as compared to enlarged images printed on photo grade paper.

Question:
How large should the file size of my photograph be for good resolution?

Answer:

We recommend that photos be taken at a 6 megapixel resolution or greater. This is available with most digital cameras sold today.  Once uploaded, your photo will be subjected to a resolution check to insure that the photo can be enlarged and printed on the picture heater.  You will be provided with the resolution results in Step 2.  Image resolution will be graded as follows:

BEST 3300 x 2475 (8.2 megapixels) or greater
BETTER 2900 x 2175 (6.3 megapixels) to 3200 x 2400 (7.7 megapixels)
GOOD 2300 x 1725 (4 megapixels) to 2800 x 2100 (5.9 megapixels)
FAILED Less than 2300 x 1725 (4 megapixels)

Question:
How long will I have to wait for my Heat by Design picture heater?

Answer:

  1. The cord can be routed to exit the bottom left, bottom center, or bottom right of the picture frame.
  2. The cord can be unplugged and removed from the picture when the heater is not required during warmer months.

Question:
Will any portion of my picture be hidden or cropped when mounted into a frame with or without a border?

Answer:

Yes, but the cropping is very minimal in order to properly mount the picture. Approximately 0.4” of the picture will be hidden on all edges when the picture is mounted into a frame without a border.

HIDDEN PORTION :  NO BORDER, FRAME ONLY

Approximately  ½” of the picture will be cropped at the top & bottom for horizontal pictures and left & right for vertical pictures when border is selected.

CROPPING: VERTICAL PICTURE WITH A BORDER

Question:
How is the Heat by Design picture heater manufactured?

Answer:
Heat by Design frames are constructed of a black resin material that offers superior dimensional stability through hot and cold cycles. It will not warp or fade. The frame has a built in TouchSensor™ switch that turns the heater on and off and has a green LED light to let you know it’s turned on. The heater will automatically turn off after 10 hours.

TThe picture is printed on a special aluminum surface that conducts heat. The base aluminum is white and any large areas of white on the image will be glossy in appearance.

The images on Heat by Design picture heaters are printed with a commercial four-color printing process that uses ultraviolet light to cure the inks. We use UV-based inks to ensure that your image will not fade due to heating or exposure to direct sunlight.

Heat by Design picture heaters require electricity for the heating elements to function. You can neatly dress the cord and plug to exit the frame of the picture at the left, center or right side. During the ‘off’ season the cord can be removed and you can continue to enjoy your picture throughout the year!
